Five Question Friday! 3/28/13

I can't believe it's already Good Friday! I swear, it was just Ash Wednesday, and now we're almost to Easter...and I can't say I did a very good job at my Lenten resolution. Disappointed in myself. :(

1. How often should adults have birthday parties?

2. What was your room decorated like when you were a child?

3. Do you have any traditions for Easter? If so, what? and do you have a why behind that?

4. Do you get Good Friday off? If so, any plans?

5. Did you wear hats & white shoes to church on Easter? (Or was that just in the South?)

---------------------------------------------

1. How often should adults have birthday parties?

Are we talking major, friends and family and food and beverages kind of parties? Or are we talking low key, immediate family, dinner, cake?

If it's the former, I'd say approximately once every 10 years. Unless you're me and decide to throw your hubby a random 36th birthday party, then every 5-6 years. ;)

The latter? Yearly. Every person deserves to be celebrated at least once a year. It's nice to pamper them and give them a day just to themselves.

2. What was your room decorated like when you were a child?

Ew. Lavender.

Right down to the carpet.

I should really thank my parents for that. I mean, purple carpet? I'm not even that nice...the carpet MUST be neutral. Wall colors I'm super flexible on...that takes much less money to change than carpet. And, arguably, less work. I think I'd rather tape a bedroom off than move every cotton-pickin' thing out of a room to replace the carpet.

Whoa. Major digression.

Anyway, my room was purple...walls, floor, bedding. With Tiger Beat magazine posters of Kirk Cameron and Donny Wahlberg on the walls.

3. Do you have any traditions for Easter? If so, what? and do you have a why behind that?

Aside from the Easter basket hunt? Yes, we do.

Church. We're Catholic, so during Holy Week, we practically live at church. Well, not really, but we're there often. I love this season and what it means for my faith. Easter mass is one of my very favorite masses...can't beat Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, but it's a close race!

The Saturday before Easter we go up to the Mr.'s parent's hunting land. Can't say that I'm looking forward to it this year, though. I'm sure you've heard my grumblings about the never ending winter we're having? Yeah, well, that winteryness extends to the Hunting Land.

Even more so.

And, there is no running water...which means no indoor plumbing.

Oh, and there's the small issue that I'm slightly high-maintenance and somewhat cold-blooded, which means I end up holding my pee (or, well, you know) until we get home and I spend the entire day freezing my patootie off.

But the kids love it. So, there's that. It's for the children.

Then Easter Sunday, we do Easter baskets, Easter mass, brunch at my parents then supper with my dad's side. It's the one holiday we get to spend with his side.

And then we spend Easter Monday recovering. Or, warming up, in my case, from Saturday.

4. Do you get Good Friday off? If so, any plans?

By chance, yes, I do this year! I forgot to ask for it off, but thankfully, luck was on my side and I wasn't scheduled!

We plan to go to Good Friday mass. Where I'll probably cry a little. I get so emotional with this holiday, so if you see me sniffling in church, that's why. We also plan on dying eggs...yeah, we're right on the ball this year!

Egg dying is one of those things that sounds good in my head, then when I actually set out to orchestrate what, in my head looks like a fun, friendly, peaceful family craft, turns out to be utter chaos and spilled food coloring and fights over who's turn it is to have blue.

Oy. Why did I remind myself.

5. Did you wear hats & white shoes to church on Easter? (Or was that just in the South?)

Totally a Southern thing. The only hats we wear up here in the Great White Forever Frozen North are stocking hats. And even those we take off when we go to church.

And white shoes? Dude. If it's not 47 degrees below zero on Easter, then it's a muddy, sloppy mess and so, yeah, maybe I've wrangled my girl's into white shoes before, but they usually end up some mucky shade of gray.

So we just wear our snow boots.

KIDDING. Sorta. Minnesota has two seasons: Snow boot season and flip flop season. No time for fancy white patent leather shoes. ;)

That was fun!! I really enjoy this week's questions! Have a fabulous Easter weekend!

  2. thanks for hosting! yeah, I love seeing my son's reaction to Easter too, it's all about their fun. We go go to church too.

  3. I tear up on Good Friday services too! Especially at the end of ours: the church lights go dim, and the pastor reads the scripture about the crusifixtion of Jesus. Then, as he reads about his death, the lights get turned out, and as soon as the pastor reads, "And with a loud voice, Jesus called out again, "It is finished." and he gave up his spirit."

Then, after a moment of silence, the pastor SLAMS the bible shut (not to be repoened until Easter morning). I always jump...and I always cry.

    How awesome is our Savior?!!?!

  4. I have always loved the whole Easter weekend. Never get tired of the story. Mel Gibson's rendition of the cruxifiction was really powerful, and we are looking forward to watching the final episode of The Bible Sunday night. I always cry. Sandy, from your discription, I would really love your Good Friday service at your church!
    He is risen!!

  5. I completely know about holding it! I did a pre-race day production contract with ESPN for a Nascar event about, gosh, 17 years ago. I was known as “The Girl From ESPN” to everyone because I really was the ONLY female at the track for the four days before the race. The women’s room wasn’t unlocked yet. I could use the men’s room, but the lights weren’t on in there yet. I was NOT going to use the men’s room without lights! I may be a grown up tomboy, but I’m also half grown up girly-girl! I drank very little water and waited until we went into town for lunch! I was doing it for the ego of a paycheck with an ESPN logo. Doing it for your kids is much more noble!

I wore white shoes in Michigan when I was still little enough for Daddy to carry me across the slushy puddles on the way into church!

    Have a Happy Easter weekend!

Come here looking for the tutorial? It can be found here:  Halo Braid Tutorial!  Let me know how it goes! I had something in mind to try on Baby Girl's hair the other day...my best bud, Dr. J, did something similar to it on Belle once, and I was trying to replicate it. Instead, I got this: Isn't it pretty?! It didn't take nearly as long as it looks and isn't nearly as intricate as it looks! Vlog tutorial coming soon...(for those of you waiting, I'm sorry it's taking me so long!)

And...try your best to not slice up the little fingers that are sneaking away pepper strips... (Lemme just inte
