15

To my big boy: Oh my word. Where did the last 15 years go? Seems like just last week, I was taking you home...nervous and in disbelief that they were actually entrusting me with your care, I set out to prove to the world that I was going to be a GREAT mom. (I'd mention here, how you were a terrible breastfeeder for the first two weeks but I was DETERMINED to make it work because, by gum, I was a GREAT mother and I was PROVING it to the world!!!, but I don't want to embarrass you, so I won't mention it.) (I also won't mention that, once you finally caught on to breastfeeding, you were such an aggressive eater that you would clench your fists up by your face and SWEAT...and be done in 5 minutes flat. You spoiled me. But, I won't mention that, again...embarrassment.) After being a mighty arguer, you have since tamed it down (*SNAP* goes the rubber band...) and are one amazing teenager. You have an incredible head on your shoulders (as evidenced by how you handled the ...

This made me smile...

Our Wise, Old Hambone

Last night, we had a battle of wills. Our babe, who has been getting a warm body to fall asleep next to since we put her in a big girl bed, was proving to be indecisive. Daddy, mommy, daddy, mommy...it's a game that was beginning to be played with too much frequency. So last night it was: Daddy vs. Baby Girl--Round One. He decided, once and for all, that for one cotton pickin' gosh darn night, she was gonna go to sleep in her own bed...BY. HER. SELF. (Although, I'm not so certain his foul mood was so much about teaching her better "sleep hygiene" as it was related to a broken heart.) :( Cue tears, "I want mama", and much carrying on. All the while 4 other children were trying to go to sleep. Next thing I know, Hambone says ( all serious and exasperated) to the Pal: "I can't take this crying any more...I'm sleepin' with you." And he marched himself downstairs to sleep in the relative quiet of his big brother's room. Hambone...o...

A Very Unfortunate Club

Here's the thing about grief...about losing a loved one...you soon discover that you are part of a very unfortunate club. A club that includes too many people that have had to endure the pain of losing someone close to them. People you see everyday, people you know well, will begin to tell you about their experiences with death. I am amazed by the amount of people who have lost someone close to them. Who have struggled with these very feelings that I have. Who have survived the pain and learned how to live their "new reality". Hearing these stories, seeing people who have lived this anguish, makes me feel a little bit normal. A little bit normal, when sometimes I feel like I am going crazy. Literally. After spending the week of Verd's death in a state of mind that left me truly feeling like I was just having a horrific dream, this week I found myself, at times, feeling like it never really happened. Like he wasn't really dead, just away. I wonder if this is part ...

To My Baby:

Dear Baby Girl: This post is 10 days late...will you forgive me? The world seemingly stopped when we lost your Uncle Verd just a couple of days before your birthday. February 2nd, 2011 passed in a blur of tears and broken hearts, no one felt like celebrating a birthday...but today , we will celebrate you. You and the amazing way you have blessed our lives since you entered this world three years ago. The tiny little bundle that you were, came blazing into this world and captured our hearts the moment we laid eyes on you. Bull-headed from the get go, you've always known what you want, how you want it, and who you want it from. Your blue eyes sparkle with the joy and silliness that only a toddler can possess. Not too very long ago, you wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with snuggling...when bedtime came, you didn't want to rock or snuggle or sing or read; you just wanted to go "nigh-nigh" in your crib. That, however, changed the instant we put you in a big girl bed...you ...
