Five Question Friday 6/10/11

Well, it's official. I think I was meant to live in Texas. Wait...is it humid in TX, or just plain ol' hot? 'Cuz if it's humid, I'd like to retract my last statement. Please, and thank you.

I am really hoping for some quality family time this weekend. The Mr. has been working his fool head off (16+ hour days, anyone?) and I'm hoping that things slow down enough that we can hang out. Drink coffee, break up kid fights, make googly eyes at each other, and get some stuff done around this pig sty that we call "home".

Okay, on to the feature presentation...Five Question Friday! Welcome to all you new 5QF'ers...I'm glad to have you!

Rules for 5QF: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear Friday morning and LINK UP!

Questions for Friday, June 10th: (Special thanks to @LisaCurcio, @Shutterbug_Mama,@JoleneSlavik, Sandy, and Christine for their question suggestions! If you would like to be linked in a future 5QF, head over to my community and offer up your question suggestions...or shout 'em out to me on Twitter using hashtag #5QF and be sure @5crookedhalos me!)

1. How close to your childhood dreams is your life now?

2. What is one must have item for the summer?

3. Do you have your kids stay up on school stuff during summer vacation? (Or, if you don't have kiddos, did your parents make you keep up on school stuff during summer?)

4. Do you can or freeze fresh produce?

5. Do you get ready for the day first thing in the morning?

------------------------------------------------

1. How close to your childhood dreams is your life now?

Pretty dang close...only I'm not working at the Dairy Queen. I go there frequently enough that I could prolly work there, but one job is plenty for me.

Although...do DQ employees get discounts? 'Cuz I'd be ALL over that. And then I'd be even flubbier than I am now. Muffin top? Heck no, it's a POP OVER!

On second though, perhaps I need to thank God for that unanswered prayer.

2. What is one must have item for the summer?

Flippy floppies!! As soon as I can possibly stand it, I break out the flip flops. Or, as one of the docs I work with says, "flops"...as in, "Oh, they let you wear flops to work now, huh?" (No, they don't.)

I prefer the comfy cute Reef style ones, but sometimes, the fun splash of color of the cheapie Old Navy rubber flops suffice!

3. Do you have your kids stay up on school stuff during summer vacation? (Or, if you don't have kiddos, did your parents make you keep up on school stuff during summer?)

Heck to the N-O!!

Summer is our time off! Our time to let our brains relax and turn to mush!

My kids enjoy reading, so sometimes they'll pick up a book, but no. I don't make them do school stuff! My son's teacher once said that she wishes we had school year round 'cuz the kids lose too much over summer...I said, and I quote, "I don't think I like you any more."

Then we laughed. But I'll tell you what, if anything would make me flip the switch to homeschool, year round school would certainly do it!

4. Do you can or freeze fresh produce?

Once upon a time, I did. Once. For one year. With tomatoes.

The Mr. and I made tomato sauce and canned it...and I LOVED it! The homemade sauce, not the canning. It wasn't terrible...but I certainly wouldn't call it fun.

I'm trying to psych myself up for some serious canning this fall...I really want to feed my family less processed food and more "home grown" food, so hopefully we'll be successful at it!

Our straw bales are planted...I'll hafta do a post on them soon. But they aren't growing yet...we just planted on Sunday night, then we got the scorching hot weather and now it's cool, so if the garden fails, I'm blaming the weather. It's easier on my ego that way.

5. Do you get ready for the day first thing in the morning?

Did you see how I started out my answer to #3? Well, say it with even MORE gusto for this question!

I am a "jammies til noon (or later)" kinda girl...to my husband's "don't leave the bedroom until you're dressed for the day". We're yin and yang like that.

Hey, it's all about balance. I do it for the sake of our marriage...I mean, just THINK how awful it would be if we BOTH were go getters in the morning. That would be a travesty. A horror.

For the sake of the continuation and peacefulness of my marriage, I sacrifice my morning ambition. You're welcome, hon. :D

Okay, my lovely readers...now it's YOUR turn! I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!

  4. I like your view on summer break! And the jammies. Even though I am not naturally inclined towards those sorts of things, I do admire the laid back attitude. I am actually working on relaxing a little more and taking things as they come.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

  5. I guess there are kids who lose stuff during the summer but my lovelies never did..we spent our summer days at the beach! Who wants to study when there's a beach only five minutes from their house?! LOL

  7. I like your post. And yes, working at DQ is a pretty sweet gig in the summertime, especially spending time in the walk in freezer. I think it should be required in every home in the southwest. Happy Friday!

  8. Don't move to Texas...It is almost more humid than hot here...sometimes up to 80% humidity. I'd take dry heat any day!!!!

  9. I feel your pain with your hubby's work schedule. Mine has been working 15+ hours a day for the past couple of weeks with only two days off. We never see him anymore! He was off yesterday and it was so nice! I hope you guys get some great family time this weekend.

  10. My first week on 5QF. Fun questions. :)

I'm a pj lounger too. It's a definite perk to working from home.

  11. My first time doing 5QF too!

And...some parts of TX are humid. :( Hate to burst your bubble. I think the other parts of TX are desert.

  12. I've lived in Texas all my life....both in Central and East Texas and it's humid too, NOT just hot. It can be very unbearable at times....especially on the days it's over 100 and humid as well. :(

  13. Think it's mostly humid in south eastern part of Texas. San Antonio can get extremely humid and quite miserable in the summer. When I lived in Midland (west Texas) it was not bad at all. :) Happy Friday!

  14. yin ang yang in marriage is definitely best - my hubby is the early riser and I'm the night owl - I feel it really helps us watch out for our children a maximum amount of time ;)

Come here looking for the tutorial? It can be found here:  Halo Braid Tutorial!  Let me know how it goes! I had something in mind to try on Baby Girl's hair the other day...my best bud, Dr. J, did something similar to it on Belle once, and I was trying to replicate it. Instead, I got this: Isn't it pretty?! It didn't take nearly as long as it looks and isn't nearly as intricate as it looks! Vlog tutorial coming soon...(for those of you waiting, I'm sorry it's taking me so long!)

Halo Braid Tutorial!

How appropriate, "halo braid", no?! ;) Finally, I have this ready for you...I apologize for the delay! This braid looks intricate, but is really quite easy and quick to pull off...the original video (prior to the warp speed braiding...watch the video to see what I mean) was just a bit over 8 minutes long...not too shabby! So, here you go...right in time for you to try it out on your little girl for Easter!

Crock-Pot Fajitas

You should probably finish reading this post first...you know...so you know how to make it... But then...STOP! STOP everything, make this, and thank me later! Oh, hold it...wait just a sec (again)...actually, I got this recipe from Melissa...yes, the Melissa of this story ! And this story ...which, well...is the same story, just told two different ways! ;) So, you can thank her...I guess. Well, in any event...prepare your tastebuds to be tantalized! You'll need this: And, this: You'll also need chicken breasts or steak, but since photographing your "main ingredient" is, like, soooo passe, I've left it out. ( Ahem... ) Just keepin ' up with the times, friend. So...slice up those peppers and onions into cute little strips... And...try your best to not slice up the little fingers that are sneaking away pepper strips... (Lemme just inte
