Baby Specs!

A month or two ago, I noticed Baby Girl was squinting one eye when looking at close up objects, books, etc. I started watching her like a hawk, looking for the same eye turn that Belle has.

When Belle was diagnosed with accommodative esotropia, we were told to watch our younger kids, as it tends to run in families. I watched Baby Girl so closely that I wasn't entirely sure if I actually was, indeed, seeing her eye turn in, or if I was just being that crazy, overprotective, "I'm seeing something that's not actually there" kind of mom, but nonetheless, I made an eye doctor appointment for her, convinced, if anything, that her squinting needed to be evaluated.

Well, mere minutes into that eye exam, and it was confirmed that Baby Girl also had accommodative esotropia. You'd think that I'd be all knowing and full of the right questions to ask, being we've been down this road before, but yeah. No.

Not until I got home did all the questions come.

Anyway, after selecting her frames and waiting impatiently (wait, that was me), Baby Girl was outfitted with her brand spankin' new specs today! In a bittersweet moment for me, I had a little tug on heart, as I realized we have to get used to her "new look". I remember the same apprehension with Belle, so I know that it won't be long before her adorable glasses will be "a part" of my spunky Baby Girl.

I'm also thankful that she will be entering school WITH her glasses, as opposed to getting them during the year and having them be "different"...now, her classmates will only know her with glasses! Bonus!

So, for now, we just do the struggle with getting the right adjustment on her glasses...was in two times in as many hours today and she still is complaining that they hurt. :( Back we go tomorrow!

Anyway, here is my sweet girl in her glasses!

Five Question Friday! 7/26/13

I am so blasted tired. It is 12:23am, after a busy couple of days of work, baseball, life and this mama is WIPED!! Good thing we've got a mellow weekend in front of us! (Aside from baseball...baseball, baseball, baseball. It's a good thing I love it...although, I'd be lying if I didn't say that by this time of the year, I get a little baseball weary.)

I have freshly washed sheets tonight, thanks to my amazing 11 year old, but she used too much Downy fragrance thingamajigs and WHOO-WHEE!! Smells like a laundromat in here! *cough cough* *sneeze* *choke*

Anyway, let's answer this week's questions!

Welcome to Five Question Friday!! You've come to the right place if you discovered your muses are busy watching baseball playoffs.

1. What is your best secret cleaning tip?

2. What is your favorite food to snack on during movie night?

3. If it was up to you, what would you have named the royal baby?

4. If you could be any Disney character who would you choose?

5. What's the most important part of a healthy relationship?

----------------------------------------------

1. What is your best secret cleaning tip?
Okay, so I'd totally be blowing smoke up your butt if I tried at all to answer this question. See, the thing is, I'm not the best housekeeper...BUT!! BUT I am trying!

Over the last several months, I have been making a bigger, better effort at cleaning the house...however, that means I'm behind the 8 ball in terms of tips. I got nothin'.

Nothin' 'cept, "Don't make a mess in the first place." ;)

Honestly though, I find that I'm most motivated right after my morning cup of coffee...and truly, keeping tidy from the get go is the easiest way I've managed to keep things clean!

Now...if only I can get my boys to grasp this...

2. What is your favorite food to snack on during movie night?

Well, popcorn, of course...but I love to have some Dots with my movie.

Tropical Dots, to be precise. FRESH Tropical Dots to be specifically precise.

Oh, my friends. There is not much that's better than a box of FRESH, soft, chewy Dots on movie night.

Funny, on the flip side, whenever I eat cheese balls or cheese puffs, I prefer them slightly stale.

Fresh Dots and stale cheese puffs. What more does a girl need?!

3. If it was up to you, what would you have named the royal baby?

While George is a wonderful, upstanding name for a Royal King...I'm just not diggin' it for a baby. Certainly this means that Prince George will grow into his name, but...George?

It's just to grandpa-ish. I would've named the baby Riley Kyle Southeast. KIDDING.

I love old fashioned boy names (except for George), but I would've definitely gone more the route of Arthur, James, Philip, Louis...maybe they'll call him by his middle name "Alexander"...or his initials, "GAL".

Honestly though, I know I'm a total dork, but the royal family and their history totally captivates me. I'm completely fascinated by them and their rules and traditions and I realize I only see what the media chooses to show us, but it really seems like Will and Harry are some remarkable men, despite being born very privileged.

4. If you could be any Disney character who would you choose?

Oh, man! This is a thought provoker!

Of course I go right to one of the princesses. Not Rapunzel...too stifled. Not Cinderella...too much housework. I'm thinking Giselle. Naive and cute and a bit ditzy and the worst thing that happened to her was that she got pushed into a sewer in New York.

Wait. Um...gross. Maybe not. Well, yeah.

I'm going with Giselle.

5. What's the most important part of a healthy relationship?

Hoo boy! This one practically deserves a blog post all to itself! THE most important thing? You mean, like, other than God?

Respect.

You and your spouse will not always agree or see eye to eye but most of all, you need to respect one another. No bashing, no talking down to, no controlling or demanding or being demeaning...just, respect.

With respect comes kindness and everything else follows.

So, Kate's Havin' a Baby?

We all woke up to news this morning that Princess Kate was in labor...which makes me kinda excited!

I know most Brits have a different attitude toward the Royal Family than we Americans do, but bottom line? It's a baby being born to (what seems to be) a wonderful couple...and THAT'S something to celebrate in and of itself!

The mother in me feels so bad for Kate. I can't imagine what kind of security they have to have to protect this precious new life...but good golly. The fear. We all become protective of our children...but what if your child was a target because of your position in life?

I'll take my quiet, "unprivileged", little corner of the world, thankyouverymuch.

Honestly though? With the Kim Kardashians and "16 and Pregnant" girls representing pregnant American women...I'm kind of sad that Kate isn't ours. Her grace and beauty and the way she handled this pregnancy (quietly, modestly, in a strong, healthy relationship) is exemplary. THIS is the type of role model our young girls need!

Perhaps I have a "Disneyfied" view of the Royal goings-on, but what I see is impressive, so Kate, Thank you. Thank you for being the classy woman you are.

Now, on the flip side...wouldn't it be kind of hilarious if Kate and Will named their baby something totally trendy? Forget the Edwards and the Henrys and the Elizabeths and Carolines...what if they did something totally trendy or off the wall? Like "Ariel"...or "Giselle"...or "Kyle"...or "Riley"...or "Castle"? Can you imagine?

Back to social media stalking of the Royal Labor...

Five Question Friday! 7/19/13

Here I sit, at 11:05pm on Thursday night, writing my post for Friday morning, with the wimpiest fan I've ever encountered blowing on me. Seriously. It's like, if you stood across the room from someone and very gently blew in their direction...that's what this fan is like on the highest setting.

And I was so excited about it! (I mean, it oscillates in a "figure 8" pattern, you guys!)

Anyway...my weekend to work is coming up, which means I'll put in 24 hours in the hospital. But, as I've said before, if I have to be at work, I'm sure glad I get to welcome babies!

Okay, let's get to the party!

Welcome to Five Question Friday!! You've come to the right place if you discovered your muses are off getting their hair done.

1. What is one thing you have too many of in your house?

2. Did anything go not quite as planned on your wedding day?

3. What is your favorite summer smoothie recipe?

4. What is the weather like where you are?

5. What is your favorite book to read to your kids?

----------------------------------------------

1. What is one thing you have too many of in your house?
Hmmmm...lemme think on this.

Um...dustmites?

A spider (cuz one spider is one too many)?

No, no, no...I know. Degrees. We have too many degrees in our house right now. And...what would a measure of water in the air the be? Deciliters? Well, in any event, we have too many of those, too.

See question number 4.

2. Did anything go not quite as planned on your wedding day?

You know...not that I can think of! Funny, little stuff...like a blizzard the day before and day after our wedding day. And the usher waddled the aisle runner down the aisle all funny (like, bent over, unrolling it). But, nothing big.

However, our daughter was the flower girl for aforementioned usher's first wedding and the cutest thing happened. All day long, during pictures and stuff, we were outside and a gust of wind would come up and blow a few flower petals out of her basket and we'd run after them and put them back in her basket Well, when it came time for the ring bearer and her to walk down the aisle, she started sprinkling her flower petals, as directed, and the ring bearer looked at her, mouth agape, and proceeded to pick up nearly every petal she dropped and put in back in her basket!

Poor guy, he helped us race after those petals all day and then she DELIBERATELY drops them? The nerve. ;)

Still makes me smile when I think about it!

3. What is your favorite summer smoothie recipe?

Okay, well first, you take some ice. Then you add some lime juice and top it off with tequila. Blend until smooth and ahhhhhh.

Oh, wait. Not like that?

My favorite smoothies are berry smoothies. I don't really have a recipe...I just dump in what ever fruit I happen to have on hand, toss in some sort of liquid (milk, juice, 7-up), maybe some yogurt or ice cream and top it off with ice.

Yum.

Now I want a smoothie. Strawberry. With Vanilla Ice Cream. Wait. That's a shake.

Okay, nevermind. I'm not good at this smoothie thing.

4. What is the weather like where you are?

Good golly is it ever hot. I am NOT complaining though. It snowed until last week (or so it seemed) so I am appreciating this hot, humid, sticky, thick, scorching weather because I know all too soon it will be frigid and blustery.

Although, if I'm going to be totally honest with you...this "no air conditioning" thing sucks. Van AND home? Totally sucks.

Our temps are in the mid 90's with heat indexes in the triple digits. Total heat wave for us. Minnesota really does get the best of both worlds. The HOT heat and FRIGID cold...add in the glory of spring and the splendor of fall and it's no wonder that my ancestors stayed here.

(Remind me that I said that when January's weather hits.)

5. What is your favorite book to read to your kids?

So, gasfamily actually asked this a couple of weeks ago and I completely forgot about it until last night, when I was (finally...been so bad about reading this summer!) reading to the kids.

I LOVE to read SkippyJon Jones. You can read it with such a goofy, fun accent...I just love it! I'm not sure if my kids love it...my accent, I mean...but what matters is that I do. ;)

More generically, I love to read shortish books to my kids. Books that go on and on and on without going anywhere ("Fox in Socks", I'm talking to YOU.) are enough to make me want to weep.

I like a great picture book with a cute storyline and not a ton of words on EVERY page. I avoid TONS OF WORDS like the plague.

--------------------------------------------------------

Enjoy your weekend! I'll be keeping cool at work! ;)

Thursday Night 5QF Sneak Peek!!

Is there anything better than sitting in the salon, getting pampered? I think not.

Just When I Think I'm So Smart.

Someone goes and beats me to the punch...or, I guess, strikes with a stronger punch?

Remember this post?

The "ADCD" phrase that I thought I coined? Yeah, now I'm seeing it all over Facebook in a cutesy little cartoon photo. Fer dumb.

And, remember this braid? Yeah, thought I created this beautiful style...only to discover that a popular blog also claims to have created it. Fer double dumb.

Then, there's the inadvertent, catchy titles I sometimes come up with...and then realize that some uber popular blogger titled one of her posts the same. Guess I file those away in my brain and then think, "Oh, I KNOW! I'll call this "Girls Room Redo"!!" and think I'm all smart and sassy and fun and then realize I must've actually tucked The Pioneer Woman's blog post into the recesses of my mind.

I promise I'm not a thief.

I'm just not as organically and originally cute as I thought I was.

Not nearly as clever as I once believed.

And, apparently, forgetful of stuff I read on other sites.

But...can I at least claim "Fer dumb"? Even if it's not mine (but I think it is)...can I have it?

Just like all the others,

In the Kitchen with Gram...Sloppy Joes!

Curse you, Adam Sandler, and that damn "Lunch Lady" song!! To this day I cannot say "sloppy joe" without immediately singing, "sloppy joe, slop, sloppy joe".

Gram is having company next week and in preparation of their arrival, she requested that we make sloppy joes. Here's something I've learned over the years...sloppy joes are as unique as chili. Everyone has their own method and their preferred taste!

Gram's, however, are a homerun with everyone...super easy, with ingredients we all have on hand. (If you don't have ketchup on hand, we can no longer be friends. That's all.)

Let's get cookin'! (Warning: This is NOT a precise recipe! This is definitely a "season to taste" recipe!)

Brown your burger...take note of the butter in the bottom, a Gram standard!

Add in onion:

And minced garlic:

Next up, chili powder:

And, because the clump of brown sugar is impossible to differentiate from browned hamburger in a photo, just pretend there is a gorgeous, well differentiated photo of brown sugar being added to the hamburger here:

Gorgeous, huh? (So glad we all have good imaginations...)

Now, the ketchup. Heinz, OF COURSE.

And mustard...I'd say about a 1/4 of the amount of ketchup you put in.

Stir well, cook down, taste and adjust seasonings if need be! We added a bit more salt and a splash of vinegar (it was a smidge too sweet, the vinegar cuts that).

Serve on dollar buns, add cheese or pickles or go all out and add cheese AND pickles. GASP!!! Only if you dare, though. ;)

Gram's Sloppy Joes

(Recipe based on 3lbs of hamburger, all approximate amounts, taste and adjust seasonings before serving)
3 lbs hamburger, seasoned w salt and pepper, browned in 3 T butter
1 small onion, diced
1 tsp minced garlic
2 "Gram handfuls" chili powder
1/3 cup brown sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Apple cider vinegar (optional)
1 c. ketchup
1/4 c. yellow mustard

Brown hamburger, onions and garlic. Add remaining ingredients, stir to combine and allow to simmer for approx 15 minutes to meld flavors. Taste and adjust accordingly. If it's too sweet, add a splash of vinegar. If it's just kind of "blah", add a bit more salt and some chili powder. If you like your sloppies with a bit more kick, crank up the chili powder amount! Serve on dollar buns as is, with cheese or pickles or go all out and add cheese AND pickles! Yum.
